Indoor gardens have been around for many years. These indoor garden spaces are designed to provide the home owner or renter with a place to grow and nurture exotic plants that would otherwise be lost in the wild. Many of us do not know how to properly take care of these indoor plants because we live in a house and most of us are busy trying to keep our indoor plants alive and well. But, as indoor gardening became more popular there was a tendency to turn it into something else and commercialized it. Many people began planting and selling indoor garden decorations in what was once known as “the garden” but now is known simply as “the apartment.”
Many of these commercial indoor plants sold today have plastic and mesh tops which can be filled with soil or potting soil. The truth is, many indoor plants are actually not sold in the traditional manner at all. Rather they are bought in pieces and then after the plant has had some time to acclimate to its new environment the salesperson will tightly tape the bottom of the container so that the soil will adhere to the plastic.
When these plants come into contact with the soil, it becomes matted and clotted creating what is known as “furnishings.” These indoor plants are then moved around and placed in different locations in the home until the owner finds a spot that is convenient for placing his or her indoor plants. Many times the owners of the apartment building will have little plants placed on the windowsills and furniture near their apartments.
There are also many indoor plants that are sold in the form of “sculptures.” These are usually short roots that have been fused together or injected into larger pots. Most of the time the plants that are sold in this fashion are succulents and cacti. When people who live in studio apartments purchase these plants from the gardening centers they are most often placed in a corner of their living room or bedroom.
One great selection of succulents that can be placed inside of glass containers are “fire-pits.” These are pots that have been lined with burnished glass and are filled with a small amount of soil. The plants that are placed in these pots do not need any additional light to survive. These succulents are very easy to grow in terrariums and usually begin to bloom around the end of summer.
Many people who are considering an indoor garden are surprised by the number of indoor garden plants that are available. In fact, there are dozens of plants that are suitable for being grown in containers indoors. Some of the most popular plants include:
For those who have the space available, it is possible to grow a variety of plants in one small unit. These could be small shrubs, herbs, and miniature trees. Just remember that indoor plants require adequate light and water to thrive. The best way to provide both of these is by putting several small units close together.
Indoor gardens make a beautiful addition to any home. It can be fun to plant a variety of flowers and plants that you may never have seen outside. Try experimenting with the different types of containers and fill them with something you would like to grow. You will quickly find that your indoor garden is just what you imagined it to be.
To create an indoor garden, you will need to buy or make some type of container. One option would be a simple terrarium. In a terrarium, you will use a clear plastic to create a glass container. You can purchase clear terrariums at stores where pet supplies are sold. Make sure that your terrarium is large enough to house all of the plants that you intend to put inside it.
In order to grow your plants from seed, you will need to purchase some seeds and mix them up with some soil. One suggestion for growing seeds is using charcoal chips. Simply place the charcoal chips in a shallow dish filled with water. Place the container of water on the bottom of a kitchen sink and turn it over once in a while to allow the charcoal chips to absorb water. This allows you to have moist seeds in your soil without having to worry about getting the soil damp.
Once your garden is established, you can add soil, gravel, and some basic pots and the cactus will begin to blossom. When it is finished blooming, you can cover it with a plastic cover and use your covered glass containers to store your flowers. You can continue to do this for several years and your indoor foliage garden will develop a lovely shape and lush green foliage.
